Sir Harry Selley was born in Topsham, Devon in 1871, At the age of 21, having completed his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Harry walked to London to seek his fortune. Along with fellow Topshamite Charles Swain, they founded a firm that built some 25,000 houses across South London. He served on the London County Council from 1925-1935, was MP for South Battersea from 1931-1945, and was knighted for public and political services in 1944. He was President of Master Builders from 1945 until his death in 1960 at the age of 89.
The pulpit in St Margaret’s Church, Topsham was funded by Harry in memory of his friend Charles Swain.
